While some of the really “good” gossip that was supposedly going to be in Lynne Spears’ book might not exist (there’s no talk about her drug addictions or sex – so the whole “drinking at 13, sex at 14” stuff probably either isn’t true or didn’t make the book’s final cut) Lynne Spears still has plenty to share about her feelings on the turmoil that’s surrounded her family since Britney became famous.
It seems that Lynne’s two greatest heartaches came from Britney’s legendary meltdown and Jamie Lynn’s pregnancy. Lynne says that Jamie Lynn and boyfriend Casey Aldridge told her the news by handing her a letter, which infuriated her. “In Touch” uses the word “rage” a few times – but mostly about how Lynne has since dealt with most of hers in regards to Jamie Lynn. She seems to still have a lot of issues regarding Britney’s meltdown, her managers over the years – particularly Sam Lutfi – and Britney’s very public head shaving.
…Spears rejects the image that she pushed Britney into show business, and writes that the singer was always focused on achievement and would constantly practice to the music of Madonna, Whitney Houston and others… In “Through the Storm,” Lynne Spears presents herself as a loving, selfless (she gave up her job as a school teacher for her daughter’s sake) but increasingly powerless parent. After the jolting, but pleasant surprise of Britney Spears’ debut smash, ” … Baby One More Time,” Lynne Spears says she felt she was losing control when a 1999 Rolling Stone magazine story featured a racy cover of the singer in panties and a bra.
Lynne Spears recalls feeling “shock and dismay” at seeing her daughter shave her head, at her brief marriages to childhood friend Jason Alexander and dancer-rapper Kevin Federline, and her highly publicized custody battles over her two children.
The bottom came in the past two years with Britney Spears’ increasingly disturbing public behavior and her drugged private life in her Malibu, Calif., house. Lynne Spears writes that she was distraught as then-manager Sam Lutfi told her he was grinding pills and putting them in Britney’s food, hoping to induce a coma that would enable doctors to cure her of all addictions… Britney Spears was hospitalized twice this year, the second time in February, when paramedics took her to the psychiatric ward of the UCLA Medical Center, where her mother says she finally received the care she needed. It was, Lynne Spears writes, a “turning point” for the entire family.

It sounds silly to say but I’m really disappointed in Lynne Spears. If she wants to make the argument that Britney’s managers are who ruined her life and she helped pulled her back together fine – but why release the book now? Was it so important to make a profit that she couldn’t wait a few years? I mean yes Britney has her act together relatively speaking, but she still needs to build up a solid foundation of trust in other, good decision making, etc. In many ways she’s starting from scratch. If Lynne really does care – why in the world does this have to be now?
It’s good that the book isn’t as detailed about tawdry stuff as it was reported to be. I’m guessing those rumors were based on drafts that did at one point exist, but got taken out for some reason. Hopefully it was because Lynne had enough sense to keep stuff like that private, not because she was forced to. Either way, I have no plans to read it. This just makes her seem like another person trying to profit off her daughter’s name… again.
Here’s Britney shopping on August 28th. C Images thanks to Fame.
