Amie Harwick's brother demands public apology from Wendy Williams after host made light of her death

July 2024 · 4 minute read

The brother of Amie Harwick has called on Wendy Williams to make a public apology after she made an 'extremely distasteful' joke in reference to the sex therapist's death.

Chris Harwick's sister died after she fell off the balcony of her Los Angeles, California home on Saturday and her ex-boyfriend Gareth Pursehouse has been charged with murder.

While announcing the tragic news about Harwick - the ex-fiancee of former Price Is Right host Drew Carey - The Wendy Williams Show host said Monday: 'She was killed... not by Drew, but by the ex... come on down.'

Referring to the show's well-known catchphrase 'come on down', Williams, 55, looked towards the ground as if watching something fall, drawing gasps of shock from her studio audience.

Chris told Fox News: 'Domestic violence is something no one should be joking about.'

'This is a difficult time for my family and for Wendy Williams to make light of this tragedy is very upsetting to us and extremely distasteful,' Chris continued.

'My sister worked tirelessly for domestic violence victims and women's rights. Wendy Williams should apologize publicly to my family for her comment.'

The Pennsylvania woman is survived by her parents Penny and Tom Harwick.

Her funeral is scheduled to take place in home state next Thursday.

LA resident Amie previously had a restraining order against Pursehouse, who she dated 10 years ago.

The restraining order against Pursehouse had expired at the time of Harwick's death, and she had, 'expressed fear about a former boyfriend'.

Many viewers bashed Williams for the joke, including @AuntKimmie_GG, who said, 'I KNOW #WendyWilliams did NOT just make a 'come on down' joke about Drew Carey's ex-fiancee getting killed by being thrown off a third floor balcony!!! Somebody tell me I heard that wrong, please.. but the audience is stone-cold quiet.'

@BotchedNews added, 'Did @WendyWilliams really just 'joke' like that about Drew Carey's ex? Disgraceful,' adding her behavior was, 'very disgraceful' and, 'she should be thrown off the air.'

@lilltigger7 added, 'Did Wendy Williams just make a 'come on down' joke about a murdered woman?'

On January 16 he allegedly harassed her at the XBiz adult-industry awards ceremony, which was hosted by porn star Stormy Daniels, in downtown Los Angeles.

'Gareth knew Amie was going to be at XBiz. He stalked her there and went bats**t crazy,' Harwick's close friend former adult-film star Jasmin St. Claire said to Page Six.

'He was at the awards working as a photographer, but his behavior was abusive and threatening. He was yelling and screaming,' she added.

'Amie told me after the incident that she was scared he would show up at her home. She went to the police, but they did not take it seriously. He was really obsessive over her; controlling,' she added.

Though Harwick alerted the cops about Pursehouse's behavior after the incident, nothing was done.

'There should be an Amie’s Law to protect women. It is a tragedy Amie went to the police a few weeks ago … The LAPD failed her. It is just devastating,' St. Claire said.

Pursehouse was arrested on Saturday and charged with murder. He was released from prison on a $2million on Tuesday.

Amie's friend Diane Arias started a Justice 4 Amie petition calling for no expiration date on restraining orders until requested, mandatory long-term counseling for the stalker/abuser and institutionalization if they are deemed a danger.

Arias also believes victims should not have to testify in a courtroom close to their abuser/stalker and there should be an option to live stream in a safe space.

'This man clearly needed treatment, incarceration and/or punishment for years prior to this attack,' Arias says in a petition that had approximately 36,000 signatures by Wednesday afternoon.

The Change.org petition required 50,000 signatures before it's sent to California politicians.

'She should have never been in this situation like so many other victims.

'The process to get a restraining order is very difficult, traumatizing and must be repeated when the restraining order expires.'
