Ariana Grande is known for her petite figure and explosive live performances, but does she owe her great shape to a vegan diet?
Ariana Grande describes herself as vegan, but her devotion to a plant-based diet had been questioned in 2019 after she promoted a Starbucks drink made with milk and eggs.
Stick around to learn more about Ariana Grande’s plant-based diet and why some of her fans aren’t convinced that she’s 100% vegan.
Going Vegan
Back in 2013, Ariana Grande announced her decision to become 100% vegan on Twitter, and said she made this choice after years of trying to “keep meat minimal”. She was motivated by the 2011 documentary Forks Over Knives, which suggests that a vegan diet can prevent several chronic diseases.
Grande talked about her vegan lifestyle with Mirror and revealed that she no longer eats a lot of Italian dishes since she consumed enough meat and cheese in her youth to last a lifetime.
“I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-round happier person. It is tricky dining out, but I just stick to what I know – veggies, fruit, and salad – then when I get home I’ll have something else.”
The singer’s personal trainer Harley Pasternak discussed her eating habits and fitness routine with Glamour Magazine in 2015 and revealed that she follows a macrobiotic Japanese diet and enjoys eating daikon, lotus, and adzuki beans.
Grande’s decision to go vegan was also motivated by her love for animals, and she’s been very outspoken about animal rights. She encouraged her fans to avoid visiting Sea World after watching Blackfish and also advocated pet adoption on social media.
“Donutgate”
Ariana Grande is obviously a firm believer that everyone should embrace a healthy diet, but she didn’t always do such a great job addressing this issue.
While discussing her vegan diet with V Magazine, Grande joked that “Americans end up looking like cows” because they drink cow milk and ended her rant saying, “Ultimately, no one wants cow t-t pus in their food, do they?” These comments went mostly unnoticed, but this wasn’t the last time she made controversial remarks about obesity in the US.
Back in 2015, Grande came under fire after a bizarre rant at a donut shop. Surveillance video footage showed her licking donuts and saying “What the f— is that? I hate Americans. I hate America. That’s disgusting!” after a worker at the shop brought out some freshly-baked treats.
Grande later released an official statement apologizing for her remarks, and said she’s proud to be an American, but expressed her frustration over the high obesity rates in her home country.
“As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole,” said the Grammy winner.
She also posted a video apologizing for her mistakes and promised she’s going to learn from them and be a better role model in the future.
Starbucks Controversy
Ariana Grande secured numerous endorsement deals over the years, but her collaboration with Starbucks received a lot of backlash from her vegan fans. She helped this brand promote their “Cloud Macchiato” beverage, but it turned out this drink wasn’t 100% plant-based.
Grande encouraged her fans to try the soy version, but that wasn’t enough to make it vegan. This beverage is not complete without its fluffy Cloud Powder, and egg whites just happen to be one of its key ingredients.
There’s a chance that Grande was promoting “Cloud Macchiato” without trying it herself, but that possibility didn’t minimize the outrage. Many people showed up at Starbucks and ordered this drink due to her misleading post, unaware it wasn’t really vegan.
